In our spare time… celebrating our team outside of work

Meet Floss Clifford, our Creative Director, who dedicates her spare time to mentoring female business owners and women in the events and hospitality industry. We asked her why she takes time out to do this.

The transformative effect of mentoring

Meet Floss Clifford, our Creative Director, who dedicates her spare time to mentoring female business owners and women in the events and hospitality industry. We asked her why she takes time out to do this.

Floss on stage mentoring a group of people

“Mentoring is probably one of the most rewarding and pay-it-forward experiences I’ve ever been part of. There’s something about championing people that reminds us what’s really important in life. I used to mentor for FastForward15 – a fabulous women’s mentoring programme. I only stopped when I had my first child and found myself juggling too many important things.”

Why do people use a mentor?

“I find that most people think their challenges are all centred around work – new ventures, getting a promotion, making career changes and so on. However, my years of psychology training have made me realise that none of these things happen in isolation. You can’t tackle any work ambitions without a more rounded and holistic approach. The way we work and the decisions we make are inextricably linked to our self-understanding, behaviours and mindset. You will never achieve your ambitions until you understand more about yourself. Mentoring is far more successful when it centres on the whole person.”

So, how does that work in practice?

“In the FF15 programme, my mentee had ambitions to climb the corporate ladder and find where she belonged in the events industry. We did a lot of work together and completely reframed her thinking, which involved a lot of soul searching. As a result of understanding more about herself, her real motivations and her true potential, she got multiple promotions and, ultimately, her dream new job.

“A woman I’m mentoring now runs two highly successful businesses in the beauty industry. When we met, she felt as if she was treading water. The mentoring process has been a real amalgamation of both work and personal challenges. As we have delved deeper, it has helped her tackle change around performance, personnel and products. She has also made many personal changes outside of work that have helped her prioritise what matters most to her. She is now almost finished building a new enterprise, which is looking ridiculously promising, and she has a clear growth plan that is completely different from what she thought she was aiming for.”

What’s next?

“My next plan is to focus on female business owners who are trying to refocus and find their purpose in work since becoming mothers. It’s something very close to my heart after discovering first hand just how hard it can be. I cannot stress just how much I underestimated that change! And I’m certainly not the only one.”

Any last words?

“Mentoring is an honour and I find the whole experience incredibly rewarding. It’s fantastic to help people see their potential and soar. As well as that, it makes me love people and the world just that little bit more.”
